Fours teams have entered the IPL 2016 playoffs in which the new franchise – Gujarat Lions (GL) lead by Suresh Raina have made it to the top of the table followed by Virat Kohli’s lead Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB), Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Now, lets have a look into the format of the play offs.
3 matches (Two qulaifiers and one eliminator) to be played between 4 teams to reach the finals:
1st match (Qualifier #1):
Its a qualifier match which means the team that wins this match wil be given a berth in the finals and the loser will still be having a chance to get in to the finals by playing.
The team stationed at 1st and 2nd positions in the points table by the end of league matches will be playing the first qualifier match and winner of this match will go through to the finals.
2nd match (Eliminator):
The eliminator match is to be played between the third and fourth positioned teams in the points table. The winner of this match will play the qulaifier match #2 with the loser of qualifier #1. However, the loser of the eliminator match will be elimiated.
3rd match (Qualifier #2):
The Qualifier #2 will be played between the winning team of 2nd match and loser of 1st match in the play offs. The winner of this match will clash with winners of qualifier #1 in the finals.
To simply it, the teams ending at top 2 in the points table of league matches will have two chances to get in to the finals whereas teams ending up in 3rd and 4th placews will have to win two matches to reach the finals.
